Pediatric Dentistry

We offer pediatric dentistry services at Doche Family Dental in San Marcos. Our friendly team teaches your children the proper way to care for their teeth and that going to the dentist can be fun.

We provide the best pediatric experience possible in a calm and inviting environment. Parents choose us to treat their children because of our ability to deal with all types of child behavior and special needs.

How important is it to keep baby teeth healthy?

If our kids lose their baby teeth in a few years, does it matter if they get cavities? Many parents think this way, but that’s something we strongly discourage. Just because baby teeth are temporary doesn’t mean they’re not necessary. Baby teeth are essential for chewing food, learning to speak clearly, and mastering lifelong dental health habits like brushing and flossing. They also guide the permanent teeth into place. Your child will also be happier if their teeth are healthy.

When is the right time for a child’s first dental appointment?

A child can benefit from a dentist when their first tooth appears! That’s why we, along with the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommend bringing them to see us around six months old (and no later than their first birthday). The earlier you get them in, the more advice we can offer on caring for incoming baby teeth and managing those difficult teething periods.

Why is Pediatric Dentistry Important?

The sooner children begin getting regular checkups, dental cleanings, and learning good at-home oral hygiene, the healthier they will be throughout their lives. Early checkups prevent cavities and tooth decay, leading to pain, trouble concentrating, and other health issues.

Pediatric dentistry is for children from 6 months old until their final adult teeth have come in, up to 12 or 13 years of age. Many parents opt to have their children treated into their teenage years.

What are common oral health problems in children?

Besides tooth decay and cavities, other common oral health problems in infants and children include:

Tooth Sensitivity

Premature tooth loss

Bite and alignment issues

Thumb sucking

Dental Anxiety

Lip sucking

Tongue thrusting

Dental emergency

Gingivitis and gum disease

Parents are often shocked that their children can suffer from an oral problem like gum disease. Besides, gingivitis and gum disease usually affect older patients. But these diseases can strike patients of all ages, young and old when there is a problem with poor oral hygiene and diet.

San Marcos Premier Dentistry for Kids

You’ll feel comfortable and relaxed when you visit our office in San Marcos, CA. Our team is caring and friendly, and we work hard to create a welcoming and compassionate atmosphere. With years of experience in pediatric dentistry and working with children from infancy to young adulthood, we’ve developed many pediatric services. The pediatric dental services we provide are:

BPA Free Tooth-Colored Fillings

You may have heard some worrying things about BPA, or Bis-Phenol A, a compound in tooth-colored dental fillings, but don’t rush back to silver amalgam just yet. We can leave tooth-colored fillings with BPA and the dangers of mercury poisoning that come with amalgam fillings behind because numerous tooth-colored materials are free of BPA.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy treats soft tissue conditions, such as lip and tongue ties. Laser treatment is minimally invasive and, unlike treatment with a traditional scalpel, it usually does not require a local anesthetic.

Lip & Tongue Tie Release

Laser frenectomies can happen as early as a couple of days after birth up into adulthood. The sooner a problem with tongue or lip tie has been discovered and addressed, the better the procedure will work and the fewer issues the child will have.

Pit and Fissure Sealant

Typically, sealants are applied to the molars because these teeth are the ones that do the most chewing and have those deep crevices where bacteria can hide. The sealant will fill in and cover any crevices on the tooth to act as a shield from the bacteria. What makes them even better is that the sealant application process is quick and painless!
